About this deal

Rob: Putting aside the fact that I think we’ll see errata for the Terrax drill to make it hold half the number of Possessed – and until it does I think the drill and Possessed have play in a mono DG list – I think there’s potentially a home for Death Guard Possessed, but that home is in a soup list. Without Rhinos or drills to move a unit of 10 across the table, Warptime is your next best bet for getting them where they need to be. Losing contagions for them stings a little, but opening up your arsenal to include Daemons and Chaos Space Marines gives you access to Poxbringers and psychic powers like Shrivelling Pox and Virulent Blessing as well as the Veterans of the Long War Stratagem. It’s the one area Possessed bring something to the table that Blightlords don’t, by virtue of being DAEMON units. I don’t know that Possessed are good enough with 1 damage weapons to make this worth it, but I think someone’s going to try. Bloodletters • Plaguebearers • Horror of Tzeentch • Daemonette • Nurglings • Beast of Nurgle • Plague Drone • Flamer • Screamer The Plague Surgeon, though in the narrative more concerned with curating new strains of disease than healing anyone, can return a destroyed bodyguard model to the unit he’s joined during the Command Phase with his Tainted Narthecium. He’s also able to join a unit with another character, and his ‘Diseased Healing’ allows him to return up to three lost wounds to a wounded character within 3″.

Don: This book is filled with potential and has made all of our units better. There were a couple nerfs, like the malefic talons going down to AP1. However, most of these units have other things that buffed them, like the daemon prince sword becoming str +1 ap3 3dmg. I do not know what “the list” will become because so many builds look great and viable. I do believe that Death Guard feel like they should from the lore. They will be unrelenting and will provide a lot of pressure to their opponent. I do not feel that this codex is more powerful than the Space Marines or Necrons codexes. We definitely have some stand out units/stratagems, but each codex of 9th does. I look forward to seeing what people come up with. A+ The Barbaran youth Calas Typhon kept a secret: he was gifted with psychic abilities, not unlike those of the alien masters that ruled the planet Barbarus. This is also where the Death Guard army bonus comes in. Similar to what we saw for Space Marines with Combat Doctrines , Death Guard now get a bonus for keeping the army to a single faction: If every unit in your army has the DEATH GUARD keyword, then those units gain the Nurgle’s Gift Contagion ability, which gives enemy units within contagion range -1 Toughness. As the Heresy ground on, Typhon was drawn deeper under the sway of Nurgle. Mortarion was determined to spearhead the Warmaster’s assault upon Terra, but Typhon convinced him that the fleet’s navigators were agents of the Emperor, executing them all. Typhon then offered to use his gifts to guide the Death Guard fleet through the warp. Reluctantly, Mortarion accepted. Don: It seems like the only reason to run Cultists in a DG army is to have really cheap units to perform actions. Use a fine brush to paint smaller details such as the face, belt, and other intricate elements. This step requires steady hands and attention to detail. Choose contrasting colors for these details to make them stand out. For example, you can add small symbols with colors like Mephiston Red or Yriel Yellow, or paint the guns and metallic details with Brass Scorpion. Heldrake • Stormbird • Thunderhawk • Chaos Storm Eagle • Chaos Fire Raptor • Hell Blade • Hell Talon • Harbinger • Chaos Dreadclaw • Kharybdis Assault Claw • Fire Lord • Doom Wing

Wings: As well as the one’s called out above, you get the now-standard extra Warlord Trait and Relic strats, and for the latter there’s a separate strat letting you give a sub-set of the relics to unit Champions, Marine supplement style. The extra trait and relic strats both have the new wording requiring your actual Warlord to be Death Guard to use them, so you can’t dip into the traits and relics here without a reasonable commitement to the Plague Legions. The other two new ones that caught my eye were:You get a +1 on the To-Wound rolls due to Veterans of the Long War. (so effectively 5,6s on your to-wound rolls, trigger the bonus Mortal Wounds) Chaos Lord • Exalted Champion • Chaos Champion • Aspiring Champion • Sorcerer Lord • Daemon Prince • Daemon Prince of Nurgle • Daemon Prince of Tzeentch • Death Guard Lord Wargear Tweaks. A lot of weapon profiles were tweaked, to the point that I’m pretty sure we’ll get an FAQ updating profiles for Thousand Sons and Chaos Space Marines and Daemons soon, which will probably not be so great for those factions. Also there are a few melee weapons that went down by 1 Strength that won’t feel it if you’re running mono-Death Guard.

It’s a solid list, and a few of them can be given to squad champions via a Stratagem. Deadly Pathogens No Mercy, No Respite secondaries are probably going to make more sense with a Nurgle-heavy army where Grind Them Down can benefit large plaguebearer squads that are hard to remove, or large units of Horrors that can split models and be a chore to grind through, making it likely you can score points for Grind Them Down on a smaller number of kills. Your game plan already relies on killing more units than your opponent most games, anyways. Thin Their Ranks isn’t liable to be something you’ll look at and is really more something you want to make sure you’re not giving up inadvertently – taking 90 pink horrors with splitting is going to make this one a no-brainer against you. While We Stand, We Fight isn’t likely to be a good play, since it’s most often going to double-reward an opponent for killing your greater daemons. A terrifying, towering entity as large as an Imperial Knight, he still wields the arms and armour with which he fought during the Great Crusade – the xenos pistol Lantern and the mighty scythe Silence, clad in the Barbaran Plate – though they have been imbued with terrifying warp-power, as befits his status among the most exalted Daemon Princes of Nurgle. Start layering the colors on the model to create highlights and shadows. Layering adds depth and dimension to the model. Use a lighter color than the base coat and apply it selectively to raised areas or edges. For example, use a lighter green like Warpstone Glow to highlight the edges of the armor.

I will not stop to tell you how to paint the Biologus Putrifier, this is not what we will do today, in any case here you can find the videos on how to paint the Death Guard marines. Apply the base color to the different parts of the model. Use a larger brush for larger areas and a smaller brush for details. For example, paint the armor with Death Guard Green or something similar, like Caliban Green, and the tentacles with a mix of Citadel pink and flesh colors like Screamer Pink and Rakarth Flesh. Make sure to cover all the areas evenly. There is no finer laboratory than the battlefield. Such a glut of test subjects, their flesh and vitae awaiting only the touch of Nurgle's gifts to flourish into new and magnificent fecundity. With every jab of the needle, every crisp shattering of the alembic, their blessed suffering brings my concoctions closer to perfection." The Plague Marines pile into the drill with a pair of characters – typically this will probably be the Sorcerer and the Biologus Putrifier, though you could swap in the Blightspawn as needed depending on the threats and if you wanted the Plague Marines to focus more on melee. Otherwise the unit can arrive in the drill, jump out, and be ready to raise hell with the Blight Bombardment stratagem and boosted combat output from Trench Fighters, Putrescent Vitality, and Blades of Putrefaction.
